National Service in Education

AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers support students in public, private, and charter schools, as well as out of school time programs, across the country. AmeriCorps' work provides cost-effective, high impact services to address schools’ most pressing needs and ensure students are ready for college, careers, and full participation in civic life. Evidence shows AmeriCorps members and volunteers improve attendance and engagement, increase high-school graduation rates and expand college enrollment.

Impact inside and outside of the classroom

Together, AmeriCorps members and partners:

  • put caring, capable people in schools to support students’ social, emotional, and academic development;

  • invest in mentors and tutors to help improve students’ literacy and numeracy skills, improve graduation rates, keep students on track and boost academic achievement;

  • support early childhood education by introducing oral language and literacy exercises, conduct in-school tutoring, and family engagement as part of a well-rounded approach to improve student engagement and attendance;

  •  prepare students for college and career by helping students explore post-secondary pathways, offering college application assistance, and supporting financial aid exploration; and

  • bring STEM learning to classrooms and provide digital literacy training to students and community members through public computer centers, schools, and after-school programs to equip them with the skills desirable by employers and integral to dozens of career paths.

Program Highlights

AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparents

AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers with the Foster Grandparent Program help guide students to higher academic achievement, care for premature infants or children with disabilities, and mentor troubled teenagers and young mothers. The Foster Grandparent program connects role models like you with young people with exceptional needs.

Communities in Schools

Based directly inside schools, AmeriCorps members serving with Communities in Schools connect children and their families to basic and critical educational and community-based resources, tailored to each student’s specific needs. They help create equitable learning conditions by ensuring that that students have everything they need to reengage in learning: access to technology and school supplies, emotional support, and more.

College Advising Corps

College Advising Corps places recent college graduates from our partner universities as full-time college advisers in underserved high schools across America. AmeriCorps members work alongside school staff to mentor, encourage, and assist students one-on-one as they search for colleges, complete admissions and financial aid applications, and transition from high school to higher education.

Indigenous Educator Corps

AmeriCorps members deliver enriched educational experiences that build on community-defined needs and strengths for Native American students in New Mexico. They tutor and mentor students and add support in the classroom and during after-school programming. Learn more about what they do in the video below.
